Partners in Crime. Photographer couples who work together
They met each other in a both traditional and modern way, partially thanks to Mr Zuckerberg. "Unusual!" - some may say. "Pff, nothing special!" - others would exclaim. But even these two camps would definitely agree that it's quite unusual these days to carry on your partner's family photo business, which is now going into its 60th year of flourishing.
Meet Teresa and Dado of the Portugal based Arte Magna.
— How did you two meet?
We would love to say it was old-fashioned but it wasn't. :) A mutual friend and Facebook were the perfect Cupid and in 2013 the arrow hit us. We drank our first "sangria" and never let go of each other.
— How did you start working as a couple?
It was quite natural. Teresa was already photographing weddings with her father and together they had Arte Magna (which was founded by Teresa's dad in the 70s). In 2015 we photographed the first wedding together and in 2017 Teresa's dad retired and we adapted the company to what we always dreamed of. Also 2017 was also the year in which we built the studio of our dreams and left our street store. A clean space with just the essential... And of course with our plants and books.
— What's the hardest part about working together?
We honestly don't think there is any difficulty or hardest part. If there is respect everything goes well. We always like to see the good in things. Working as a couple is wonderful... When one is unmotivated, the other helps to lift the mood. We always paddle in the same direction. For example, 2020 was a difficult year, but together we find solutions, we motivate each other to feel active and creative.
— How do you go about when you disagree?
When we disagree normally we put the pros and cons on the table and reached an agreement. We really love talking and being on the same page, always. We think good communication is the base for everything.
— What's the tip you'd give to other couples planning on working together?
As we said in the previous question, respect. Respect is the basis for success. Debate ideas, dreams, fears and desires, always. Always making decisions for two based on this respect makes everything lighter and easier. And of course, outside of work, it is necessary to give space and time for each one to have their hobbies.
— Best thing about working as a couple?
Does giving kisses and hugs at any time of the day count as a valid answer? :) We are so lucky and every day we are thankful for that. And we also have the opportunity to share adventures, for example, when we travel to another city or country. We are lucky and so grateful for the life we have.
— All time favourite photographer(s)?
Teresa:
I could be fancy and say Vivian Maier, but I must confess: it's Dado.
